Low-water desert front yard with decomposed granite and cactus at a Phoenix home

Desert Landscaping and Grass-to-Desert Conversions in Phoenix

Licensed AZ Contractor · ROC #365090

We convert thirsty lawns into low-water desert yards that still look designed, not a flat field of gravel. A good desert conversion in Phoenix is about more than pulling the grass. It is grading the yard so water runs the right way, building a clean decomposed-granite surface, and placing real desert plants with intention. We handle the whole thing, from demo to lighting, under one roof.

Our Grass-to-Desert Conversion Process

Turf Removal, Grubbing, and Haul-Off

We start by stripping the grass, cutting back overgrown vegetation, and grubbing out the roots so nothing tries to grow back through the new yard. Before any digging, we call Arizona Blue Stake (811) to mark utilities. All the old material leaves by dump truck, which is more volume than most homeowners expect once a full yard comes out.

Grading, Drainage, and Decomposed Granite

With the yard cleared, we grade it so water drains away from the house instead of pooling against it. Then we bring in decomposed granite, usually shortened to DG. It is a fine crushed granite that we screed to grade and compact into a firm, walkable surface. That is the difference between a finished desert yard and a loose pile of rock that shifts underfoot. A weed barrier under the granite cuts down on what grows through, though no desert yard is ever truly weed-free, since wind drops seed on top.

Choosing Desert Plants and Trees for Phoenix

This is where a yard stops looking like bare ground and starts looking designed. We curate a plant palette and place it with purpose: a run along a property wall, beds in front of the house, a mix of heights and shapes that reads as intentional all year. Reliable choices include 'Desert Museum' palo verde for shade, plus golden barrel cactus, agave, prickly pear, and ocotillo for structure and accent. Even drought-tolerant plants need regular water to establish, so we put them on a drip irrigation system with a timer that delivers water right to each plant's roots. After the first year or two, plants like these get by on very little.

Landscape Lighting and Metal Edging

The details are what make a desert yard look finished after dark and crisp during the day. We set metal landscape edging to give the planting beds clean, deliberate lines instead of a soft border between plants and granite. And we install low-voltage (12-volt) landscape lighting, with path lights along walkways and uplights at the base of the trees, so the yard looks its best in the evening and adds real presence to the front of the home.

What a Desert Conversion Costs (and the Phoenix Grass Rebate)

Most front-yard conversions in the Valley run somewhere between $5 and $15 per square foot installed. Where yours lands depends on how much lawn and vegetation has to come out, how many plants and trees you want, and whether you add drip irrigation and lighting. One thing worth knowing: the City of Phoenix runs a residential grass-removal rebate that pays roughly $2 per square foot of healthy turf you take out, with a minimum area and limited funding. Several other Valley cities run their own programs. It is worth checking your eligibility before you start, and we can point you to it.

Why Hire One Contractor for the Whole Yard

A desert conversion touches demo, grading and drainage, granite, planting, irrigation, and lighting. Hiring one licensed contractor, ROC #365090, to plan the sequence and manage it all beats lining up a landscaper, a lighting installer, and a haul-off crew on your own. If you are finishing the yard, we can also build a privacy fence or pour a concrete patio or walkway in the same project.

Desert Landscaping FAQ

How do you price a desert landscaping project? We price by the yard after a walk-through, factoring in removal and haul-off volume, square footage, the number of plants and trees, drip irrigation, lighting, and any grading. You get a firm number, not a per-foot guess.

Do you handle the City of Phoenix grass rebate? We point you to the program and help you document the turf area removed so you can claim it. Approval and funding are up to the city, but we make the paperwork side easy.

Can you convert a backyard, not just a front yard? Yes. We do front and backyards, full conversions or sections, and can tie in fencing, a patio, and lighting in the same project.

How long does a desert conversion take? Most front-yard conversions run a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on size, how much demo and haul-off is involved, and how much irrigation and hardscape goes in. We give you a timeline with the estimate.
